Unlicensed Contractors Will Rip You Off
Make Sure Your Construction Contractor Is Licensed, or You'll Likely Get Scammed
By ELISABETH LEAMY
Nov. 3, 2006
Did you know you could be arrested for using an unlicensed contractor? It's true. In states that require licensing (including Charlotte County), hiring an unlicensed contractor is illegal. And if that's not bad enough, did you know an unlicensed contractor who gets hurt on your property could sue you -- and win? Unlicensed contractors are unlikely to carry proper insurance, so it has happened.
These are the extremes. But even the average experience with an unlicensed contractor can be devastating.
Also you should be aware that Homeowners who hire unlicensed contractors face several potentially costly penalties. The Department of Business and Professional Regulation can issue an order to stop construction and can levy a $5,000 fine for aiding and abetting unlicensed contractors. Not To Mention the cost of removing the work done by the unlicensed individual and redoing the project.
You can verify if a Florida contractor has a state license by visiting www.myflorida.com or by calling the board office at The Number listed below.
